9/22/04Texas Jump$tart Coalition Annual Meeting & Financial Education Summit
The Texas Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy held its 3rd Annual Meeting & Financial Education Summit on Wednesday, September 22 in San Antonio, TX. The Annual Meeting featured a keynote address by State Representative Norma Chavez, Chair of the House Committee on Border and International Affairs and a member of the Higher Education Committee. Representative Chavez has intentions of authoring a financial education bill in January and is very enthusiastic about partnering with Texas Jump$tart for support of her financial education initiatives in the border areas. The Annual Meeting also highlighted the Texas Education Agency's HCR 15 Financial Education Report update given by George Rislov, Managing Director, Division of Curriculum. Rislov suggested that as far as curriculum change in Texas, the Coalition will need to approach the State Board of Education in 2006 when they review Social Studies standards. Short of a legislative mandate, he believes that this would be our next opportunity to affect changes in how financial education materials are taught in Texas. Delivering the State of the State reports regarding financial education issues in Texas included Commissioner Leslie Pettijohn, Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner, and JoAnn Kocurek, Investor Education Coordinator, Texas State Securities Board. The Annual Meeting offered a chance for our members/partners to receive updates on state and national Jump$tart initiatives, review results of the National 2004 Jump$tart Financial Literacy Survey, define Texas Jump$tart Coalition priorities and take advantage of roundtables and networking opportunities. Attendees found great value in the speakers' remarks and appreciated their passion for financial education in Texas.
